Hunting ducks has long ago become an element of America's national culture. Hunting helps to control the population of ducks and keep it within the admissible limits. Overpopulation may lead to natural imbalance and may cause damage to other birds and animals. At the same time, hunting and conservation programs target efforts toward preserving endangered species.
Migratory ducks do not recognize state boundaries. For that reason, hunting services of the United States, Canada and Mexico work closely together. They establish migratory bird hunting regulation and they are flexible in setting seasonal hunting standards as may be dictated by environmental and meteorological conditions.
Each state has a 'State Fish and Wildlife Agency'. These agencies are sources of information on seasonal hunting regulations and general hunting rules. Their function is providing hunting licenses and information on areas that are either open or closed for hunting. Many states operate their own wildlife management programs. They cooperate with landowners, who give permissions for hunting in their areas.
Ducks Hunting - Hunter's Responsibilities
All hunters must have a hunting license and Migratory Bird Hunting and Conservation Stamps ('Duck Stamps). The U.S. Postal Service created these stamps for the U.S. Fish & Wild Service. In addition, hunters are supposed to register for the Migratory Bird Harvest Information Program (HIP). This is a free procedure, and it enables the Service to randomly contact a group of hunters and question them about their average harvest value. They do this in order to keep hunting statistics records.
Hunters should use only approved shots (steel shot, etc.). Toxicity of lead shot results in its banning. It is necessary to know and follow waterfowl baiting, and dove baiting regulations. Moreover, check the area beforehand by asking the landowner about potential baits as well as about species of ducks that are permissible for hunting.
