Wood Duck Picture
A wood duck picture will sometimes include pictures of the chicks along with the male and female birds.
These birds prefer wetlands and quiet waters, such as lakes, ponds and small rivers. Birds of this family can be found in a wide range of habitats from taiga to rainforest. These birds have a rather high reproductive range and can breed as yearlings. There are usually from 9 to 13 eggs in a clutch. Right after hatching, the hen leads the ducklings to water and never returns to the nest. Older and more experienced hens have lower duckling mortality than yearlings. Males usually leave the hens soon after mating occurs, but in some species, both parents participate in raising the young.

These birds are distributed in southern British Columbia and Alberta, south to central California and northern Idaho and throughout most of eastern USA and Canada. The birds spend winters on Pacific Coast and interior California, north Kansas, southern Iowa and New England. The diet of the birds is presented by seeds and other parts of aquatic plants, nuts (especially acorns,) fruits, shrubs, and aquatic and land insects. Young birds eat mainly insects, but may also eat duckweed, and occasionally, frogs. Males are brightly colored and have long crests.
